Secure Networks

IP-VPN (Virtual Private Network)

An IP virtual private network (IP VPN) is a way to use a carrier’s telecommunication infrastructure to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organisation's network. An IPVPN can be contrasted with a more expensive system of owned or leased lines that can only be used by that one organisation.

It can also be contrasted with a public VPN, in that the infrastructure used to carry the data is not actually that used to carry public Internet data. Rather, it is infrastructure owned or leased by the carrier, and can therefore also be thought of as a private VPN. In this way, it can be thought of as broadly similar to the old Frame Relay model – a shared network that can reduce the costs of expensive leased lines. However because the core network is built to carry IP data only, it is generally very high performance and streamlined, with little of the associated costs or overhead associated with running a network that can cope with many different protocols.

There are also many other benefits, dependent on carrier, such as definable QoS and multiple access options, DSL, leased lines etc., allowing facilities such as remote user access direct into the network.
